Title: camchains and more!
Post by Pete Sadecki(Guest) on 17.10.01 at 13:56:00

Can anyone advise please?
I bought my tr1 few weeks back and began to investigate the source of the many rattly noises from the top end.  Valve clearance seems ok- I have followed the instructions in manual, but should the specified clearance become greater as the camshaft rotates past the timing marks?
I removed the camshaft tensioners to find the ratchet mechanism past the end of it's travel - is it possible for the chains to have stretched to this degree?   Removing the cam sprocket covers the chains seem to be quite slack.
The engine spits and bangs when I close the throttle, and when I hit 5000rpm the power dies - carb sync?
The inlet manifold stubs seem to be slightly perished - tiny bubbles are visible with soapy water.   Could this cause a weak mix and the misfire?
The exhaust note on one side is quite smooth, whilst the other gives a pronounced "thump"
On the subject of starter problems, my bike appears to be fitted with a Lucas, UK manufactured, solenoid which doesn't seem original Yamaha.
If anyone is interested I can get more info on this as a route to curing what seem to be common starting problems.
Thanks guys

Istly, sounds like your camchains are well shot; how many miles has the bike done? The carb rubbers deffinitely need replacing: to get the carbs out undo the 10mm bolts for the rubbers and twist the carbs to remover the rubbers, then the carbs next. The rubbers have a slot instead of a hole for one bolt to make this easier. While you're at it, strip the carbs and clean out; don't forget the needles and jets are different for each carb; rear one runs richer to cool the rear cylinder.
I have the same problem on an XV920 with over rich idle mixture on rear pot; in my case it's doesn't help having different diameter ex pipes (sorting that.)
Starter motoer needs a look at; clean up the commutator and check the brushes; to remove the motor you need to take the alternator case off and pop the circlip inside.DON'T JUST PULL IT!!!!! You'll find the epicyclic gears at the end of the motor might have been slipping round; drill and tap through the case to fit a grub screw to cure this. Very usual problem. Don't worry about the lucas solenoid; if it works, then it's an ok modification.
Good luck!!!
