Title: oil consumption? Post by Are Johansen(Guest) on 18.05.02 at 19:56:00
Hello everyone. Im the lucky owner of a tr1 and i'am having a question about oil consumption? I've just repaired two oil-leakages and was hoping the consumption would stop. but nop.... the engine uses about 1 dl per 150 kilometers. I think this is slightly too much. Agree?? Would be interesting to hear if there are anyone who knows if that's alright... One more question. During oileakage-searching, i found a tiny hole just below the oilfilter in that same chamber that was drilled (maybe in the factory) downwards and seem to end out in the lowest bolt of the oil-chamber cover. Is this right? The oil was evacuateing along the bolt. Please mail me... Are.. |

Hi Are The oil has to go somewhere, the engine is burning it or it is leaking it, Look for leaks under the engine or blue smoke when starting to start with Hi from Erik |

This is the funny thing. There is no smoke neither when starting up or visible leakeage on the engine anymore. I just wonder if it's normal for this engine to use this amount of oil??

My experience is with a Kawasaki 1000J that had bad piston-rings. The engine did smoke, not when just idling but when you accelerated.

On my XV920rh, after the oil leak was fixed by replacing the clutch pushrod seal, consumption for highway running was about .5 litres in 2000 miles (with synthetic). I believe on this site it was mentioned that leakage may occur around the counershaft sprocket and thus be retained in the chain drive. Have you looked into this possibility? |

Regarding your observation of the "lowest bolt of the oil-chamber cover". The (US) Clymer XV handbook says the bolt hole shall have an O-ring. The book also shows an illustration with an arrow pointing to the bolt hole opening. I had oil seeping from that hole, but was able to stop it with some semi-hardening gasket paste. An O-ring would be better... Morten |

The small cover of the oil filter should be sealed with an O-ring and both fixing bolts for this cover should also have O-rings. Then there is the possibility of a faulty O-ring or no O-ring at all on the clutch pushrod. It is also possible that the sealing on the chain sprocket shaft is gone and the oil is disappearing into the chain case. But at the rate the oil is disappearing, the chain case would be filled up within a few hundered kilometers and the oil would coming out at several places on the chain case. When the oil is lost this fast it must leave traces. The chain case or the cover of the oil filter or where the cluth pushrod enters the crankcase or even oil can be seeping from the drain bolt, which can be lose or can have a bad sealing. If there are no traces of oil leaks, the the engine is burning the oil, but when an engine is burning oil at this rate, you should see a lot of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes. If you don't see lots of blue smoke when accelerating, check for oil leaks again, because it doesn't disappear by magic. Harry Spruit |
