I have the same problem with a 1982 XV 920. The starter kicks-out before engine starts. I have replaced the starter. Bike has been in shop 8 weeks. I will appreciate a response in English from someone who knows the answer

Hi I had a bike just like that for 6 years, and here is my tricks to have a good start everytime. I always make sure the battery is in good condision, all the wires from batteri to the starter is in good condision, no white or green powder at the terminals. Every spring I would clean the starter brushes and the commutator bars, so the starter is at max power output, the engine has new sparkplugs and new gasoline, I´ll drain the carburator of old gas. Now I newer use the right hand´s thomp to press the starter botton, I alwas used a finger on the left hand, it is more precise to do it that way and at the same time you won´t turn the trottle. I use fuld choke when cold and just 1.mm trottle turn when hot. Press the botton, count 1 - 2 - 3 and release, if you keep the botton in you´ll only ruin the starter gears, if the engine doés not start do it over again: 1- 2- 3 and release if it does not start in 1 or 2 tries something else is wrong.
