Hi I am new to the forum, i have a 1981 XV920RH , american version chain drve, i got it this winter, its got 44K and in pretty nice shape, I picked up an old XV virago 1000 1984 for parts and took the starter parts for mine, took it slow, i haven't had or worked on a bike for 15 years, it went well, now she starts great, couple leaking gaskets have shown up, so bit of maintenance next. looking forward to spring riding.

Hello Brent,

you scored yourself one lovely lady, if I may say so! Keep it up and if you've got questions - fire at us..

Just a quick tip from me: As you change the starter from the 920 to the 1000 version, did you also check the oil pump and perhaps swap it out for the later XV1000 one? The reason is, the fine mesh on the older style pump tends to clog up and is a lot smaller overall. The later pump of the 1984 model is the one to have and it improves oilsupply drastically, so you may want to give this a thought.
Contrary to what the manual says, the pump can be removed, without removing the rotor, you simply have to take it apart a bit, so you can take off the sprocket and then re-assemble everything inside the cases (3 or 4 bolts, so not a big deal).

Cheers,
Greg
