Rear Shock renovation (Read 2859 times)

Rear Shock renovation

I am building a project from a 1983 TR1 and  I want to retain the rear shock as an original feature.

I know yamaha state its a non servicable part but does anyone know how to get the damn thing apart for blasting and powder coating. I've had it in soak for 4 days and the collars just do not want to move

What do you mean with "collar"?

In general you need a pair of spring compressors to press the spring together, then you can somehow remove the plate that holds the spring and take the spring off. The rest of the shock can not be disassembled i believe.

In general, there are a few ways how seized up things can be released if violence does net help:

- Scream at it.
- Use a (bigger) hammer.
. Heat it.

I think he has the shock removed from the bike but wants to take it apart.

I know Yamaha says it is not serviceable but I also know I have read of people swapping the OEM spring for a progressive spring so there must be a way to get the spring off..

Is there a pin or a clip on the collar as the collar does not seem to work like collars from more modern shocks that just slide off with a slot..?

There is a Clip (not more than a piece of wire)  under the collar, same principle as on the front fork. I use some sort of lashing straps to pull the spring down, bring the collar down some millimeters. You will see the clip then. After removing it the collar comes off. Be carefull,

I know that i have changed the spring on my shock but i dont know anymore how it worked. But it is possible.

Cheers for the replies, have had the thing under a flypress but the collar just does not want to move. Will perservere and keep trying
