TR1 Packaging Heilbad Heiligenstadt or Travel Information
01.12.23 at 06:46:44

Hallo all,

As some of you may know I was looking for a TR1 to buy and I did so last August. I arranged for a Greek company to transport it to Cyprus where I live but in the end they could not hold their promise ending up lying to me and the seller.

So now I am met with three options

1. There is a company in Hamburg willing to deliver to Cyprus but it is a bit on the expensive side. But they are reliable and very friendly.

2. I can use another company from Greece that are professionals but they want the bike to be put in a box before they pick up. These guys are about 300 euros cheaper than the company in Hamburg.

3. I can wait until spring and ride the TR1 myself to Cyprus (this is the most fun but also more troublesome way). Also I would have to get temporary plates and insurance.

So I ask the kind people of the forum; does anyone have a good idea about the above 3 or can help out in any way. So it is basically find someone to package the bike in Heiligenstadt or ask the guys in Hamburg to pickit up. Or shut up and ride!

Thanks beforehand,
Evros

Hello Evros,

You've created a nice problem for yourself.
If the shipping company lets you down, it's very unpleasant.

Your big problem is the island.
There are many shipping companies that are empty Go back
to Greece, .... but not to Cyprus.
You might have better chances, if you only had transport to Athens
or Thessaloniki and drove the rest yourself.
Isn't there in GR also a transport exchange for freight forwarders where goods...
be registered for transport ??
But all shipping companies will require that the bike be on a pallet...for the forklift.
Maybe this company (link) will help you?!  https://transport.moto-top.de/
It will probably be expensive.
Option 3 seems most likely to me. Rent a van and drive yourself.
I myself can't really help you, I'm 300km away from Heiligenstadt.

Greetings Brunò  Cool

Hallo Evros,

Hallo Bruno,

I appreciate your response thank you. You happen to know the geography of the situation very well.

I can actually get it to Greece via road transport but it has to be crated. This will cost me 470 eur+vat excluding the crating which is something I have yet to figure out. Where the seller is we could not find a dealer that can supply us with a used crate.

I have found a company in Hamburg that are very professional and will do 300 eur for picking up the bike and another 300 eur for packaging. Then I have the option for either road transport with a company I choose or they can send it to Limassol via oceanfreight for another 650.

We have thought about the van from Germany to Athens but we could not find a company that will allow dropping off at a different location. If anone can suggest then I will do the cost again. Sixt suggests that they do but no quotation from the website.

And yes, I recenlty found out that there is a newly established passenger ferry from Athens to Limassol but will only operate during the spring/summer months. This would cost me 100 EUR only to cross the waters.

Hello Evros,

The Hamburg company is really taking advantage, €1250.
What is the situation in Cyprus?
Can you cross the border into Türkiye?
Would the Alanya - Girne ferry be possible?

I did a little searching on the German internet.
There are a few companies here, with small Mercedes Sprinters,
that regularly drive to GR and TR and are looking for additional cargo.
Maybe it can be done without a box, but with a small loading ramp.
And you have time, without deadline pressure.

If you open the links, click at the bottom down "Legal information",
then you will get the email and telephone.
Maybe then you'll move forward.

Hallo Evros,

Hallo Bruno,

In reality it is 1250 + vat (19% German). It is the best I could find next to the Greek spedition who wanted 970+vat (25% Greek vat). So you can see why I believe that they are reasonable.

I asked the company you suggested, they want 800 eur for pickup and package at their premises. Then I will have to arrange transport to Cyprus.

To answer your question, I am Greek-cyprior so if I try entering Türkiye I might even get arrested. My passport is not recognised there because of the Cyprus Dispute. So only via Greece or other port.

The idea you gave with the smaller transport companies we have not explored and this is great. I will contact them and see what they say. If they can get it to Greece then I can use one of the local transport companies that I found to fulfil the rest of the transport. They could deliver to their warehouse. Any company from Greece to Cyprus will charge around 400 eur+vat from Thessaloniki/Athens to Limassol.

The tourist ferry service won't start until spring which I might get away with 200 eur all in (a 2 day cruise). But that is not until May next year.

A special type of document also has to be producded called T2L which will save me from paying extra customs duty and additional VAT (EU regulations for when crossing waters). So the guys in Hamburg would clear that as well. This is another variable. German customs can produce this but the seller has not explored this option yet in case the transport company can sort it out.

Another idea would be renting a van in Thessaloniki and making the transport myself. Again I think that the savings would be marginal because the Greek speditions would charge 470+vat for this tranport. So you can now see, if I got packaging sorted at Heiligenstadt things would be so much easier.

Regards,
Evros

Hallo Bruno,

Thank you for your interest. Well here it goes:

1. I contacted most of the companies on kleinanzeigen. The minimum price was 1000 eur.
2. I decided to have a look on facebook. I never use facebook for anything so this was something new.
3. I found a group for Greek truck drivers in Germany. I joined and asked the question in there.
4. I received many responses to which I sent the same message asking for road transport.
5. I got 480 euro which was the lowest and 750 the highest. Not all responded with a price.
6. The one for 480 eur appear to be punctual because they contacted me one week ago to set up the schedule.

Unfortunately we are still waiting for the customs documentation to proceed. Me and the seller found a customs agent in Erfurt that produced the documents for me for the cost of 85 EUR. These are; an export document for exports over 1000 eur and a T2L document ascertaining the EU origin of the bike. This is so I don't pay for duty and VAT on arrival. The reason these are needed is because the bike will cross waters and not just land.

So now I am waiting for the custom documents to reach me by post. The next route for the shipping company is on the 17th-20th of DEcember which we will not make. Next one is mid-January which I believe we will go for. 5 days before the bike arrives to the port of Thessaloniki I will have to notify the ocean freight company with the needed paperwork. And this would be it hopefully.

Total cost will be around 480 EUR + 400 EUR  = 880 EUR (hopefully).

If anyone else replies with a lower price than 480 I will think about it. The ferry is fixed price no matter what.

I will update the forum when I receive it!

Evros

Hello Evros,

...well, that reads reasonably well.
What I don't understand exactly is, why the T2L document.
I know what the T2L means (export goods over €1000 from the
EU tax territory > reintroduce them into the EU custom territory, etc.).
But why with you.... didn't you register the moped ??
Because if it is approved, the custom regulations/levies are all met,
otherwise you won't get approval.
(Also applies to short-term license plates, ....not in GR ??)
Otherwise 10,000 tourists would have to issue a T2L for their car twice
before taking a sea ferry (1x there & 1x back).
The way I read it, you are introducing the moped as a commodity, .... not very
cleverly, but always complicated in terms of tax (Happy...for laypeople).
Well, the T2L has already been ordered now anyway.
However, you should definitely register/insure the motorcycle before transport.
There are a lot of evil & greedy people, you know....
Here in GER, the short-term license plate is taken into account, if you finally
register the moped and stay with the same insurance.
This means, that the insurance begins with the short-term registration
without any additional costs for the short-term.
Well, let's hope for the best.
Greetings Brunò Cool

Hallo Evros,

Abgaben alle erfüllt, sonst bekommt man keine Zulassung.

Hallo Bruno,

I went to the local customs office in Limassol and got pretty much the same response as from the German customs office. Slight variations but pretty much the same.

If it crosses air or sea you need the T2L because air and sea are considered international, irrespectively if the ferry/freight ship only does one specific route and nothing else. Makes no difference if it is registered or not, that is a different subject. In order for me to register the bike over here I need a piece of paper saying that it is clear of any duty/vat from the customs office. To get that from the customs office I need a T2L. Both clerks, German and Cypriot (who I will eventually be dealing with) said the same thing, no T2L, you pay taxes.

The only discrepancy between the two was that the German officer said that you can get a T2L anywhere in the EU whereas the Cypriot said that I should get it from Germany specifically. My other option was to get it issued from the Greek customs office but I don't know how that would pan out.

As far as tourists go, you can drive without any issues for 6 months. Then you have to tell customs for clearance. Again, you have to get clearance by paying tax or proof of union status. The ferry company only does tourist customs clearances, i.e., they will not do T2L clearance.

If I opted in for a crated service, 1500 EUR or thereabouts, the shipping company would clear the load with a T2L or manifest.

Also on the export document and the t2l that were produced, it states that there is a kaufvertrag effective on a specific date, the seller's name and my name, plus addresses.

From the seller I only got zulassungsbescheinigung teil I, I am not sure if I should get the zulassungsbescheinigung teil II as well.

Hi Evros,

yes, that's right, the 6-month. I had forgotten the time slot.
The T2L can also be filled out and submitted later.
You have “great” trust in your authorities Roll Eyes

If the vehicle is deregistered, the registration certificate part 1
will be confiscated and you will receive a deregistration confirmation.
You should have this sign-off.
This means the seller can no longer do anything stupid about
insurance and cause you trouble.
Greetings Brunò Cool

Hi Evros,

Du hast ja "großes" Vertrauen in eure Behörden  Roll Eyes
