camshaft timing (Read 4047 times)

kerosene_cowboy Ex Member	camshaft timing 25.03.08 at 04:58:40 Hi there, welcome from Perth Western Australia and thanks for the great site. Hey I have had the top end off the xv1000 1982 model to give her a cylinder hone rings ang some head work. How do I check the camshaft is in the right position (in relation to TDC) when putting the cam sprocket and chain back on. Do i just go off the Haynes manual and align the dimple in the sprocket and dowel with the cast pointer on the cylinder head. I dont want to bend any valvles! I have made sure the crankshaft timing mark was at TDC.

crazy cow Ex Member	Re: camshaft timing Reply #1 - 27.03.08 at 01:41:39 hi there down under, when I reassembled my engine, I put first the rear camshaft in the right position and mounted the chain. Then the same procedure with the front camshaft and chain. After mounting the chain stretchers I turned the crankshaft 360 deg. backwards and checked twice. After that I had to readjust the sprocket of the front cylinder. (1 cog) I think the (dismounted) chain stretchers cause a small measuremnet error. Remark that the camshafts are turning forward, while the crankshaft ist turning backwards. Good luck, Olaf

I am still not sure if the camshaft is in the correct cam position before locating the cam chain. The valves are both closed and the camshaft dowel is pointing at the cast pointer on the top of the head; so I think it is good to go. Cheers Ian

Both valves closed, piston TDC, cam dowel at crankcase marker. Cool! Guess what I'm doing on Sunday.......putting the bike back together. Thanks crazy cow
