XV920R - New Starter Needed
11.07.24 at 23:33:48

Hello again,

Next step with my bike, which has been off the road for 25 years, and I'll be needing a new starter.
I had replaced the starter back in about 1997, so it's a 4 brush starter, (Mitsuba SM-13) and obviously I'd like to replace it with the same.

I can buy a starter made in China by Wai for £108, (18727N) but the vendor can't tell me if it's 2 brush or 4 brush.

There are 4 brush starters available made by Rick's Motorsport from the USA but they are twice the price.
Before I buy one of these, has anyone here got experience with Wai starters, or replaced with another brand recently ?

Thanks

Hello Odradek,
..., just take the starter apart and clean it.
A little bit grease on the bearings and the thing turns again,
...it only has 3 years of operating time on the clock,
...what could be wrong?!?

Have a look at the picture - if the post for the power cable is in the same spot, it's either a 2 or 4 brush starter, just like your old one.

I buy mine at something-something Anlasserteile (Simon Auto or the like on Ebay), it's the same cheap Chinese stuff as Ricks and they work just as fine. A few drops of oil on the rear oillite bushing work wonders on a new starter.

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks Greg for that tip.

Photo of the starter on eBay had the terminal at the end, just like mine, so I ordered it.
Just arrived, and yes it's a 4 brush starter.

Thanks again.
