Hello and help please.

I decided to pull my engine apart for the winter and repaint and polish it. I also took the decision to improve it a little and inmcrease the engine size to 1100.

To do that I purchased an XV1100 crankshaft, conrods, oil pump, barrels and pistons.

The crankshaft fitted perfectly. (Sepp said it would.) The crankshaft was complete with conrods so they fiitted at the same time. the oil pu,p fotted perfectly. I then fitted the 1100 pistons, they fitted perfectly as well. I repainted and honed the barrels these too fitted well. I then refurbished the heads. Sepp said that 750 heads would be the ideal for performance but I am more interested in the torque so stayed with the standard TR1 heads.

But when I tried to install the head on the barrels there are no cutouts for the gaskets. Neither the rubber oil seal around the timing chain nor the cyclinder head gasket has a cutout to locate the gaskets.......................... embarrassed

What can I do? Do I have to go for XV1100 heads do they have the cutouts rather than the barrels. Do I have to use the TR1 barrels with the XV1100 pistons. Are there completely different gaskets for the XV1100 barrel/head combination?

Has anyone done this build before? Can anyone advise what I should do? Thank you.

Hey Kevin, if you can get 1100 barrels, take this one with the 1100 Gaskets, its much better.
When you take the 1000 barrels, you must take the gasket and the o-ring.
which one you take is not important for the head.
With the 750 Heads you have also more torque.  
By the way, in germany the 1000 gaskets are out of order in the moment!!! or for the whole future, i dont know!

Hello Sepp

I will try to get hold of 1100 gaskets. If I find a source I will post it here to let others know.

Also, I couldn't find a pair of XV750 heads. But if I refit the TR1 now I can fit XV750 heads as a later project.

Hello Sepp

I have found a supplier of replica cyclinder head gaskets for the XV1100. They are M&P based in the UK. http://www.mandp.co.uk/

The gaskets are very specific to the year of manufacture of the bike the barrels came off. Almost every year has a different gasket. Luckily I know my barrels came of a 1992 bike so have ordered the gaskets.

Hey Sepp,

isn't it possible to make a copper gasket for the cylinder head?

In the past I've made cylinder head gaskets out of thin copper sheet for some - ok, very old - motorcycles.

The gasket for the TR1 isn't simple, it would be very difficult. But I think it's better it's better to make a complicated gasket as no gasket to have.

Die Flächendichtung der XV 1100 kann man natürlich auch selber machen, aus Alu oder Kupfer, mit
Stärke wie man will, logisch. Hab ich bei meinem 1200er Motor auch schon, da die Bohrung 102 mm
ist. Aber für Serie völliger Quatsch, die Kopfdichtung für die 11er gibt es ja und ist mehrfachverwendbar.
Für die alte Version TR 1 geht das nicht, da das wichtigste ist, daß Kopf und Zylinder auf "Block" gehen, also
zusammengeschraubt sind und das geht mit einem eingelegten Ring nicht. Nein übersetzen tue ich das nicht.............
Eine Flächendichtung auf den TR 1-Zylinder geht natürlich auch nicht.

Kdermy: all xv 1100 gaskets and also the gasket for the bt 1100 are the same.

I have received the XV1100 gaskets from M&P and they fit perfectly. I note that Sepp say that the gaskets for the XV1100 are the same for all years but Yamaha and M&P have different part numbers for the head haskets for each year. I agree with Sepp though. The head gaskets have to fir around the same five studs for all years. I was able to track down the year of my barrells and ordered for that year and the gaskets fitted.

Please see below a photo of the head gaskets in place.

The engine is back together and ready to go back into the frame.

The conversion has been completed. Thank you to Sepp and all the others that have helped me with advice and encouragement.

I took the opportunity to repaint and polish the engine. I also found a place to rechrome the exhaust. i did the front pipe first and it came up so well I had to do the rest of the exhaust as well.

I also fitted an XJ600 master cyclinder for the front brake. That made a considerable improvement.

I just had to rebadge it. The badges now read TR1100.
