Rubber Chain cases leaking
19.04.09 at 13:47:45

Hello Folks,

The centestand has rubbed through the lower chain case and oil is leaking out of it, all over the left side of the tyre, and eventually all over the ground wherever I park (My wife gets annoyed about the oil stains in the garage, especially when the kids step in it and trample it into the house!).

Has anyone got any suggestions regarding repairs? Is there any particular glue or some sort of patches that I could use, or is this really a matter of replacing it with a new part, in which case, where could I get a new part?

Two solutions spring to mind,1) swap upper and lower cases, but will they fit if I do this? or 2) eliminate the enclosed chain and put up with having to use chain lube etc as most chain-drive bike-riders do. If I do this does anyone have any suggestions about what parts to use from other bikes, or can the original rear sprocket case be cut down? I have seen in the photo gallery a number of TR1's and XV1000's running an open chain.

Any comments will be considered helpful!!
Cheers and happy riding!
Richard

Hi Richard,
I am in the process of a slow rebuild and talked to a chap the other week who was running without the casings. He said he had butchered the sprocket cover to make an open chain.
i'm toying with this idea as my tubes look set to self destroy.

Good Luck
Gary
