Help with model numbers
24.08.14 at 01:26:05

My 30 days grace before having my account deleted are nearly up, so I guess I had better make my first post.
I've been looking for one for a while, and have finally been lucky enough to get hold of a TR1/XV1000 at a reasonable price. It's not roadworthy yet, but all the bits are there, and she is a runner. Main thing is a new exhaust system, so I guess I'll be giving MAC a call unless there are any other suggestions for suppliers.

Anyhow, I was wondering if someone could help out with a bit of information. The bikes VIN number is 5K8-0012xx and I'm curious what year this would have been made? There are some indications that it may have been imported to the UK as a used bike from Japan, and does the model number back that up?
And finally, she has a tubular chrome sump guard that I've not seen before. Was this a factory fitment, or an aftermarket item?
Thanks in advance, this forum has already been a mine of information, and I'm sure it will be again if I ever get started on the rebuild.

Thank you Odin.
For some reason the government vehicle registration department have it down as manufactured in 1986, and the engine size as 998cc not the 981cc that is cast into the rear cylinder barrel.
Perhaps the person who imported it in 1996 thought it was better to be riding round on a bike that was only 10 years old and not 15  undecided

The problem with the government vehicle registration department, we know here in Germany also happen to write error at.
Can not you change to get it to have the data in the paper correctly.

In the UK our licence plates usually disclose the age of the vehicle (after 1963) but you are allowed to transfer them from one vehicle to another, so to stop people like used car dealers cheating, there is a regulation that makes it illegal to have a 'younger' number plate than the vehicle's real age on it, so perhaps I should let them know.

However, we have a saying in English "let sleeping dogs lie", or another one about "opening a can of worms". Getting them to change this detail after twenty years may be asking for trouble. I'll have to think about it over a beer or two.  Wink

Dear Marshman, If you check out your V5C doc. It will state the year of first registration and not the date of manufacture. My reg doc states that my XV1000RJ was first registered in 1984, when it's actually a 1982 bike. Good old DVLA doing their job to the letter "NOT".

It was imported as a used vehicle, so in addition to the normal information it also has a "declared year of manufacture".Taking a charitable view, the importer must have made a 'mistake' when he filled the forms in.
