pilot screw help
03.09.16 at 06:15:26

HI I have  a 81 XV 920 RH  in canada, i just took apart the carbs and did a big cleaning  my bike is stock with 40,000 kms milage,  i have it back running  and need to sync in and set my pilot screws, what i noticed when working on my carbs is it is set up  with factory TR1 parts - jet needles  R -21 and   F - 20/pilot air jet 175/ main jets R - 126 and F-124  also  i drilled out the piolet jets to 50 all else seen good shape and now clean,   i pre set the pilot screws to 3 turns out  however running it  the front plugs showed it rich so i  downed it to 2.5 turns,   , currently with out  vacume synch it idles  ok at 1400 rpm or so doesnt like it below that - wants to stop running, it runs with out its choke once warm,  there is no pop or back fire on hitting the throttle,  id like to get  it  ideling at 1050 or so rpm  i think, plus will do a synch with a manometer  and would like to adjust my pilot screws to have it at optimum -  bit of smoke form the exhaust now but  then i had  dont the lifter settings and  new gaskets on the tensioners so could be burning that off initially.

-with these settings and jets in my 920  what would be best for close to initial pilot screw  position , is this  TR1 setup  going to work for my bike?
any think to look for on adjusting the carbs better

some history the bike didnt idle well and i suspect the floats wer  set low as  it starved of fuel at 100kms/hr or so on acceleration  - i  set the floats to 20mm   will do a wet  float test  once running well to see where im at now.
(the carbs were bit dirty  - carb filter vents had disintegrated and plugged one   air jet/ one choke tip spring was seized and my jet needles and main jets were reversed in  order front to back  so i  noticed it  like  the TR1 and set it up that way- thanks for your time

Sync it first, otherwise you'll never have a chance to set the mix screws properly. You may also want to consider swapping your drilled out pilots to unmodified ones.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi thanks i synched the two carbs  at  idle today  they are stable in vacume  my idle is down to about 1200 or so with out stalling,
i am trying to adjust the pilot screws,  i had pre set them at 3 turns out,  on listening  there is no idlle  change  when turning the rear  carb screw  even at  o turns it still  sounds the same  - the front at zero turns actually increases idle   like the bike is not labouring   , so i backed them  out to .5 turns for now.
i did a float  level test and  the rear is   6mm below  and the front is 8mmm below the bowl joint ,  (both floats were set at 20mm  dry from  bottom of float to top of main jet  cast, funny how low they are still,   ,  there is fuel or black liquid comen outa the left rear pipe and the rear  plug  is   showing  rich dark  carbon color , the front plug is  got no carbon deposits  and  no exhaust fluid,
what should i do form here  - is something still plugged  / or  any jet changes  that i can  think to do?  im going to take it for a short ride.
also  i had replaced my tensioner  gaskets and see bit of drip coming from the front cylinder   cap  at the front of the cylinder  just below the  head/ ill re check that one or a blown gasket perhaps?  thank you
Brent

Hi Brent,

I guess step one would be to get the carbs ultrasonically cleaned and then start over again. 0.5 turns is way too lean. Normally you sit at around 2 turns or more. Make sure you actually have a spark on the rear pot.

Cheers,
Greg
